I’m new to WordPress and I’m using BoldGrid. Where is the sitemap file installed.

    Any help appreciated.

  • Just to update my question. The path to my sitemap.xml is into the root of my domain. I know that. But the sitemap.xml is no where in my root directory or anywhere else.

The odd thing is I can access the sitemap via my domain/sitemap.xml and Google sees it in Search Console, but it is not visible in my Root Directory where it should be according to the Directory path.

Could it have anything to do with having “Add sitemap URL to the virtual robots.txt file” checked. I don’t see how because it says “add” not put it there instead.

The file is generated dynamically when requested. It doesn’t actually exist.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve come to find out this is in fact the case. But, it’s still a hard concept to understand. Especially coming from the world of always having a physical sitemap.xml file.

But, Google see’s it and I’m getting great search rankings so all is good even though something that doesn’t exist can be seen!!

    May I ask a follow-up question:

Where does the file get dynamically generated from when requested. Does the sitemap.xml file live on a cloud server somewhere or is there literally no file in existence.

It’s the same idea as the robots.txt file which is autogenerated by WordPress. It’s not a physical file. You can of course override that by uploading your own robots.txt file.

Since the search engines can find the sitemap, I guess I shouldn’t care whether the file is dynamically generated or a physical file living in my directory.

One thing is for sure, it’s an easy process to make a change on my site and have the sitemap automatically updated.

    Thanks for the help.
