I'm in my root directory and have made show hidden files visible... I have tried 2 FTP clients now, and I still can't find it. Anyone know where this file is?

Do you have custom permalinks set up?

If not, you may not have one. It is generated (if WP can do so) when permalinks are turned on

When you try to turn on permalinks, it gives you some code to use if the file cannot be generated

You would then make your own file, with the code provided, in the root dir

complicated. i used text editor to create the file. of course the file name .htaccess made the file invisible. So I did it again without the period (thinking I could rename it once it was in the directory). I put it there but don't see it. Suggestions on how to do this properly?

I have 'show hidden files' turned on on my computer, so I don't have that issue.

Or, I just make the file through the file manager that most hosts offer.

(Also, if you find yourself making any more new files, just donwload notepad++, it's free and works way better than notepad)

As for permalinks not working right, go back to your permalinks settings page and just hit save again to see if that works - it resets your permalinks

Can I simply modify the permission of the htaccess file? What value do I put in?

Did you try the suggested fix? I'm not suggesting you change anything, just click save. All that does is make sure all of your rewrite rules are set properly

Also, if your permalink URLs are working, your .htaccess is being seen - so there shouldn't be any permissions issue with the file.
