Support » Fixing WordPress » where is htaccess file?

  • I want to change the permalink structure for my posts, but now the links don’t work for all the previous posts. How do i change the htaccess file to reflect this? where is it??? I looked all over my root folder and wp folder, no luck. But the links were created fine with the default structure, with the clunky %-post number.

I read some of the permalink posts, and all talk about chmodding htaccess to 777. But I don’t know where it is…

    Thanks for any help,
    David

  • .htaccess will only be on a *nix based server. If your server is running Windows, you won’t have it. Secondly, .htaccess is a hidden file (any file with a . (period) in front of it is hidden in *nix). With most FTP software though you can have it show the hidden files.

If you are lucky you can probably find your FTP client’s description here at Podz’s tutorials site, and read about how to make hidden files visible.

I apparently didn’t HAVE an .htaccess file; I had to create one. If you aren’t finding one, you might try that, too. Go to the root directory for your blog (mine is /public_html/blog/) and choose to create a file. Call it “.htaccess” Once it’s created, you should be able to change the permissions to 666, (readable and writeable by all three categories) and try again.

I haven’t started running my blog yet, so I can’t guarantee that the updated links work, but I did stop getting an “update your .htaccess now” notice and get “permalinks updated,” instead.

    I hope this helps.

    Be blessed!
