Where do the drafts come from?

I tried out the editorial calendar. Two things jumped out at me immediately.
According to my posts tab, I have 29 drafts. I wanted to schedule them in the calendar. When I opened the calendar and clicked on unscheduled drafts, A huge list (hundreds) of posts came up – some of them several years old. What’s up with that?
The only “real draft” that did show up was one I had not touched in the posts list quick edit. All of the rest of the drafts (that I did “touch” in the posts lists quick edit) were all scheduled for last week even though they were still encoded as drafts. So, apparently quick edit messes up the editorial calendar’s logic.
