Where do pages go when they disappear?

My cable company (Brighthouse, in Florida) had a couple of hiccups yesterday, and when I got back onto my site, more than half of about 20 pages had just vanished! Is there a way to recover? Also, can someone steer me to info on how to avoid having the dashboard page keep reappearing in my CMS? Nobody user is going to use it.
