Twentyren is great theme to start with. If you do use twentyten, don’t customise it by editing it as a WordPress core upgrade will overwrite the theme files. Instead create a child theme to customise it.
You don’t need two installations of WP
use pages for your website content and posts for your blog
I agree Twentyren is good start just copy the theme and then modify it to suit your needs. I started with the default theme editing and modifying free themes before going onto building custom themes.
I’m sure you will enjoy using wp as much as we all do who work with it,to have the blog and site together is a good idea and is good for seo for google so you are making the right step.
cubecolour & wpheroe –
thank you for the replies.
I will stick with the theme i have and I am researching child themes.
I have been trying to get this child theme going all morning but have only been able to completely confuse myself. I am new to the whole hosting, FTP etc. And I have read and seen diferent tutorials on doing it. I suppose I need some more specific instructions for my situation with bluehost ?
How do I create the theme? do i do it through an FTP server or through my dashboard or some other way through bluehost?
I will continue to search but any direction help is welcome.

maybe that will help some? Or maybe confuse you more
I make my child theme on my computer, using notepad (any plain text editor is fine)
Once the basic theme is done, I upload it via ftp. Then I add files as they become necessary
Thanks. I have a lot to learn all around. Mostly I need to figure out how ftp works and all the basics of using my host-bluehost. Then of course all the Word press stuff.
So to upload via ftp I need to use like filezilla or Fire FTP right?
I will try to just keep reading all i can and hopefully the sun will shine through this cloud of confusion soon.
thanks for the link! just read it, good info. what do i put for :
“Theme URI:”
you are correct. FTP requires a client. Which is what filezilla is
the client is just an interface between your computer, and your server
A way to manipulate the files on your server…..
But after reading your article, I do not need to use a client? i can just do the edits in notepad-zip em and upload them?
I edited my other post but will reask her: what do I put for my: Theme URI: http: http://www.rvoodoo.com/pro……..
You may not need a client if your host has a file manager. You need a way to get the files online, in the right place.
I use godaddy…. I can just log on to their site, go to my hosting section, and manage my files.
I don’t know bluehost at all, so I don’t know if they offer a file manager.
If your host doesn’t offer a file manager, you need ftp
Theme URI is not important. It can be blank. In my example I just put in the link to the article I was writing about child themes. If you don’t plan to release this theme to the public you can just put your website URL, or whatever…..
Not sure if i should be starting a new thread or not?
anyhow.
Bluehost does have a file manager and I created the css child file and uploaded it and was able to see it in my dashboard. But did something wrong so I uninstalled everything.
I guess at this point the questions I have are:
where do I upload the new child theme file? Do I create a new directory under themes and put it in there ?do I just upload it when i am here (see screenshot)
Do I delete or replace any existing files?
And will i be making all my changes to this file for each page etc?
And when I do alter the child do i delete the existing css file and upload the new one?
thanks
you make a new folder in the themes folder, named whatever you want your theme named
the style.css goes in that folder
You do not delete or edit any existing files or folders….
so your new theme folder should be in themes, along with twentyten
And all your new theme files go into that new folder
