Go and get an account at wordpress.COM.
This is wordpress.ORG
on wordpress.com mine was auto isntalled
Thanks, my blog is hosted elsewhere, I didn’t get it through WordPress, that explains why no API key.
I have the same problem. Don’t we get API key at all if we use wp at our own host?
The steps are simple:
Register an account at http://wordpress.com
Once registered, in your wordpress.com account under Users > Your Profile you’ll find your API key.
You do not need to use the blog you set up on wp.com. You just need to have one (and active) for your API key.
Aargh! I’ve tried endlessly to work out how to install Akismet. Having discovered this thread, I thought I’d finally located the necessary guidance (the basic instructions really are pretty confusing, at least to me…) I registered an account and obtained the API key as detailed above, entered it and am informed that “Your key appears invalid. Double-check it.” It’s 12 characters, a mix of numbers and letters and I’ve repeatedly copied and pasted it from the profile page, but to no avail. Addendum – I’ve just visited the plugin management page and Akismet is listed at the top of the list with the available action only to ‘Deactivate’. However at the top of every page including this one I’m informed: “kismet is not active. You must enter your WordPress.com API key for it to work.” I’m confused and would welcome any help you can give. Many thanks in advance. Colin.
I’m having the same issue with the API Key. I have registered an account with WordPress.COM and I have an API Key. Like 11V above I still get “Your key appears invalid. Double-check it.”
And, like 11V, I can’t deactivate it because, according to it, I have no key.
I’m starting to hope this plug in is worth the effort, confusion and scattering me across sites I don’t have any intention of using.
Kafkaesqui, thanks a lot!!! It works now 🙂
