I have been using Backwpup for a while now and must say I am a fan, now I was wondering I usually backup to folder and download the file afterwards. Unfortunately Indonesian Internet speeds don’t allow me to download the backups as quick as I want, and the speed causes them often to fail. So now I wondered that given that the file is stored on the server, is this accessible for others than me? cause if it is downloading the backup of a site could give a hacker full access.

Now I think its handy to have the backup stored on my server, yet if these files are accessible to the public I will delete the backups that are hosted online.

    Hallo,

if you store the backups to folder it is the best way to store the outside the web root. The downlod in BackWPup of the files is secured with wordpress user permissions.

The best way is to store backups not on the same server not obly because hackers. IF you server crash than you can have no accsses to backuos too.
The option exists vore storing backups on volumes that are attached to the filesystem.

IF a hacker hass acsses to you account(FTP) he has accsses to all files, that are in your account.

BackWPup creates .htacsses files in the folder with the backup to disallow accses directly to the backup files.
