Support » Plugin: Darwin Backup » Where are backups stored?

  • Hi, I don’t really understand the plugin, or how it works.
Are backups stored on my server, or somewhere else?

    Hello @mdc2957,

Thank you for reaching out for explanations ! The backups are stored on your server, so you can restore using provided link even if wordpress is totally unusable. There is no support for cloud storage yet.

Please let me know if that clarifies things a bit or if you need more details

Hi, thank you for the reply. Yes, I do understand. I’m currently using WP Time Capsule, but having a full backup that is usable if the entire site somehow becomes corrupted is a good idea.

Yes, the idea behind Darwin Backup is that each backup is a PHP file which contains all the data, and as long as it is a PHP file – it can render web UI for you to restore that data. This UI does not depend on the wordpress code

One feature I’d like to see would be the ability to de-select certain files/folders from being backed up. For example, I do a staging site on a sub-domain, but that that sub-domain folder is under public_html. So I am guessing that Darwin will be including that folder in its backup? I’m guessing that because the backup file looks rather large.

Other question – I deleted the backups from the all backups screen, however, in the darwin-backup folder, I still see a big php file, two actually and they are preceded with the word “pending.” What are these files if I deleted the backups?

    Hello @mdc2957,

    1. Adding file selection will contradict the idea of simplest UI.
    2. pending-* files are either scheduled backups in progress, or some leftovers from failed backups that should be deleted in a few days automatically

    Alex

Thanks for the reply. True, it would add more settings, but maybe you could make it an advanced settings option that isn’t displayed by default. Am I correct that your plugin will back up everything under public_html?

@mdc2957, yes, you’re mostly right – it will backup everything under wordpress root, which is public_html most of the time.

As to folder selection – well, I feel that cloud integration has higher priority right now. But yes, definitely, there should be a way to allow users select directories, it is on my list of planned features.

    WBR,
    Alex
