• I’ve been using WP Performance Score Booster for about a year on 10-15 different sites.

WP Performance Score Booster works by adding three sections to the .htaccess file, with common optimization techniques, increasing performance score as advertised.

You can do that quite easily by yourself, but if you haven’t got FTP access to your site, WP Performance Score Booster comes in handy.

    HOWEVER…

In SOME cases, WP Performance Score Booster breaks 1.7 the site. And when it does, its completely. As in no logging in. So, forget about “In-Wordpress” backups like Updraft or All in one migration. You’ll have to gain FTP access to fix the .htaccess by yourself, or restore from a external backup.

So in conclusion, just be cautious. Don’t update WP Performance Score Booster on a production site. There is no easy “going back” if it fails.

    Thanks for the detailed review.

How about adding a feature that force users to download .htaccess file first before the plugin append any rules?

Do you have anything in mind? I appreciate your inputs.

I know Wordfence uses that approach. That’s a good idea, but its only useful with FTP access to restore the .htaccess file in the event of a site crash.

The lack of FTP access, was the reason I went with WP Performance Score Booster in one particular case – so having a backup .htaccess file, wouldn’t help ME much.

When thinking about it, the WordFence approach with forced downloading of the .htaccess might make it absolutely clear that changes are made on a system file level, and that you in special cases may be required to restore it via FTP, and thus turning the “responsibility” back to the user.
