First, it appears that you haven’t been keeping up with WordPress security updates. Your site is still running a version of WordPress (Version 3.3.1) that should have been updated some time ago – so there’s at least one very large possibility when it comes to “How”. As for “Why”, they usually just do it because they can. For the “Lulz”, and to spread malware.
