    What is the purpose of the supplied file “wp.php” and is it needed? Sorry if the answer is in codex but codes is down.

    As it says in the source of wp.php:

    // This is an example of a very simple template

    That’s all it really is: an example of a non-theme template with nothing but the most basic WordPress elements. And no, it’s not needed.
