A “Subscriber” can’t alter the blog, and no subscription is required to comment, so why the spam registrations? Is it just a thing that spambots do?

Also, I’m trying No Akismet since we’re running Disqus which also has some level of spam protection. I do NOT seem to be getting spam comments, so that is working, but I am getting a fair number of:
1. Spam User Registrations
2. Spam Trackbacks
3. Repeated Bot Login Attempts, usually for the account “Admin”
I didn’t used to see any of these before even though our traffic levels are the same. Was Akismet addressing any of these other issues? Or is this timing more likely a coincidence?

I’ve been seeing a lot of spam user registrations lately. I’ve just installed the stop spammer plugin, so perhaps that will end them:
