Support » Networking WordPress » What's going to happen when I click 'Install'?

  • I spent my morning trying to learn about Networks. I am a little overwhelmed, but I’m getting there.

I would like to create a network at mysite.com/network.

The goal is to have sites technically at /network/site1, /network/site2, etc., but to actually use separate domains (site1.com, site2.com) to access them. From what I understand, this is possible with plugins.

I installed WP to /network. Right now I’m nervously at ‘Create a Network.’

Under Server Address it reads: “The internet address of your network will be [mysite.com].”

My concern is this: I *don’t want anything to happen* to mysite.com.

When people go to mysite.com, I want it to look like it does now. I don’t want any files or folders added, changed, deleted, whatever, from the root of the server hosting mysite.com. I want everything to happen within the server’s /network subdirectory.

Is what I want possible? When I tested an installation on my localhost, indeed, nothing in the root folder (localhost) changed. That’s reassuring, but additional reassurance from this forum would be very helpful.

What is the “Server Address” line telling me? What will happen when I click ‘Install’?

P.S.: Am I right about mapping other domains to the sites in the network? (Incidentally, nothing will be happening at the main mysite.com/network. It’s all about the other sites.)

Thanks for your help. Please let me know if anything needs clarification.

I apologize if my questions were addressed in another forum thread. I read several threads, but I didn’t feel sure I understood them completely, and I don’t want to screw this up.
