[Resolved] What Type Of JW Configuration Am I Using??

  • Dear JW Support,

    1. Referring to thread … http://wordpress.org/support/topic/play-video-in-a-slider-widget-from-an-s3-hosted-url?replies=12#post-5384348 … you had me use a shortcode string … example … [jwplayer file=”https://s3.amazonaws.com/MyFileBucket/TodayTest-2014-03-18-1-33-PM-File.mp4″] … and in a simple text widget, it’s working, the video shows up and it plays, when you click play, woo hoo, yay!

    2. Now it is time to tweak and customize.

    3. So, I am reading in the support section of the main JW website … http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player/31561/getting-started-with-the-wordpress-plugin … and I am trying to school myself and understand exactly what type of installation/configuration is being used when I use the shortcode string you gave me, as noted above?

    4. For instance, I know that I did not upload the video file into my WP Media Content, so the video/media never made contact with the WP Media Library, and according to the Support Documentation, as I currently understand it all, I am able to manipulate/control the video from within the WP JW Player Plugin, … when/if, … you load the media/video into the WP Media Library, but I have not done that.

    5. So how do I get to configure/manipulate/control the video, in my case, since you gave me specific shortcode to use, [jwplayer file=”xxx.mp4″] … since my video is hosted in an Amazon S3 Account?

    6. Which is why I asked, “What type of installation/configuration is being used in my case?”

    7. As I do not see how to tweak and control my video’s playback and appearance, since it’s not uploaded into the WP Media Library. Do I get to control it, I would think I do, I just don’t see where I get the access to those controls and tweaks.

    8. Lastly, I made a ‘custom player’ and then I wanted to delete it, and I cannot delete it, … I get an error message … Warning: unlink() [function.unlink]: No such file or directory in /home3/myname/public_html/mywebsite.com/wp-content/plugins/jw-player-plugin-for-wordpress/framework/LongTailFramework.php on line 121

    Thanks,
    B

  • Dear Support,

    1. Upon further testing of the video playback across all five browsers, here is the report:
a.) MS Explorer … NO … Error Message: The video could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported: https://s3.amazonaws.com/FCMTestBucket/TodayTest-2014-03-18-1-33-PM.mp4
b.) Google Chrome … YES … I would like to give the video a thumbnail image.
c.) Mozilla Firefox … YES … Same here, I’d like to give the video a thumbnail image.
d.) Apple Safari … NO … the circle icon spins, but the video never plays.
e.) Opera … NO … the video does not show the center-screen arrow icon, but, if you click the lower-left hand corner play button, sound only, will begin, no visual video plays, the screen stays black.

That’s the scoop, please diagnose and prescribe!

    Thanks much,
    B

Can I see where this is running?

    Dear JW Support,

Yes, of course. Here you go, … http://www.fixcreditmyself.com. I look forward to your prescription and diagnosis doctor.

This is using JW5. Have you thought about updating to JW6?

    Dear JW Support,

Ok, well, I am game for whatever is gonna make it all work, … as in, if that’s what has got to be done, it shall be done, because I cannot have it not work on MS Explorer, Apple Safari, and Opera.

The shortcode string you gave me to use, is accessing, I guess, strictly JW5 coding/language/programming?

So, I am assuming that you are telling me that if I upgrade, then the video will play properly across all browsers???

Now, as for Item No. 8 above, is upgrading going to rectify the problem of not being able to delete the ‘custom player(s)’ I made, whilst fiddling around with the JW Player Plugin???

I will work on understanding the upgrade to JW6. Answer me questions above Popeye, and I am sure I’ll have more. 🙂

    Thanks much,
    B

Yes, I would try to upgrade to 6, it has improved html5 and cross browser support.

    Dear JW Player Support,

Hiya, … well I hit the upgrade to JW6 button in the WP JW Player Plugin and viola, I was able to successfully, easily delete the ‘players’ I created whilst testing and fiddling with the plugin when it was in JW5 mode.

Cannot wait to see if we have the video playing across all browsers now, … am gonna give the changes an hour or so to propagate, dump all browser histories, do the ipconfig /flushdns … and then I will test all browsers and be back to report.

I will keep you posted (and the support string), on how it goes. Questions and updates, … forthcoming. 🙂

    Thanks much,
    B

    Np 🙂

    Dear JW Player Support,

    Here’s the rundown …

1.) MS Internet Explorer … NO … ERROR MESSAGE: Error loading media – File could not be played.
    2.) Google Chrome … YES
    3.) Mozilla Firefox … YES
    4.) Opera … YES
5.) Apple Safari … NO … PROBLEM: Video skin shows up fine, when you hit the play button in center of player, nothing, the center icon just spins; you can stop the spinning by hitting the center button; next when you hit the play button in the lower left-hand corner, you get the same thing, the center icon spins.

Ok, coach, now how do I get MS Internet Explorer and Apple Safari to behave?

    Thanks much,
    B

    Ok, link please?

    Dear JW Player Support,

    Here you go … website … http://www.FixCreditMyself.com … and link to the Amazon S3 file … https://s3.amazonaws.com/FCMTestBucket/TodayTest-2014-03-18-1-33-PM.mp4.

    Thanks much,

The issue is that your mime type for the video is – application/octet-stream

But it should be – video/mp4

This can be set server side.

    Dear JW Player Support,

Yeah, um, throw me a little layperson lingo here, … like are we talkin’ settings in the plugin, or settings in the Amazon account???

Where do I get hold of the mime type for the video, my video??? Pray tell, please, with sugar on top? Where does this mime live? (Just being a tad silly.)

    Thanks bunches,

Settings on your amazon account. I am not sure where in the account it needs to be set, but it needs to return the proper mime type / content type.

    Dear JW Player Support,

Ok, thanks on that … at least I know where to go looking now. I will fish around in the Amazon settings and see what I see.

Will report status as I am able … off to find the mime … I’ve been exposed to too many creatures in the Fae world … ha, ha, a mime sounds like it came right out of Lost Girl, lol.

    Thanks very much,
    B
