Just wanted to share a possible resolution to this problem if others experience it.
The parent drop down box was not visible in page edit page attributes area and no -one seemed to be able to help me with this.
I did all the things suggested in the forums e.g. uninsatll plugins and see if it appeared after that, then and plugins reinstall one by one. I uninstalled my theme and switched to the WP default theme but still no parent drop down box. I uninstalled WP and reinstalled it etc
Finally, I wondered if the fact that I had not published any pages publically could be the issue. In desperation, I contacted Hostagtor and this is what they said below:
Thank you for contacting Hostgator.com. I believe that WordPress will hide the parent dropdown if there are no potential parent pages. Could you try to make some public test pages and see if the parent dropdown is visible when there is more then 1 potential parent?
I tried this and hey presto, problem resolved. So if you are only publishing pages privately like I was when you are setting up your new website, you need to publish pages publically before the parent drop down box will appear. Then you can create child or subpages.
Hoep this helps others.
