• My apologies: I imagine this comes up fairly frequently but I couldn’t find it in a search.

I write a blog on WP.org; my girlfriend hosts from her local server. Everything involving posts, content selection, photos, etc., come from me. All back-end work is on her, and I don’t have access to the server side of things.

We’re breaking up. I’m posting this anonymously, because I’m worried that if she sees this she’ll wipe the server just from spite.

Is there any way to preserve my blog as-is, and then migrate everything to a different host or WordPress.com or somewhere where my database isn’t on a server controlled by someone who hates me?

Again, I expect this is a common question, and if I’ve placed it in the wrong category I apologize. As you might expect by my naievte in setting things up this way, I’m not totally literate when it comes to technical side of blogging, so any help would be very much appreciated.

Actually, I don’t think this particular situation crops up that often. Fallouts between site owners and web developers, yes but this isn;t quite the same.
Do you have access to Tools/Export in the back end of WordPress?

Yes, it appears so. And also: I very much appreciate your time.

Forgive my ignorance, but in looking around on the WordPress.Org website, it looked like there’s a distinction between the database and everything else, and that it’s these two components which represent the actual, like, end product.

Is there a way I can export (or otherwise control) the database, if it’s only stored on a server I don’t have access to? Or is that an irrelevant question, because exporting will do everything for me?

(What I would like to avoid is some kind of botched half-measure that alerts her to the fact I’m trying to do this, because God only knows what would happen.)

I don’t like being this dumb, but asking questions is the only way I’ll learn.

No. If you do not have the correct server privileges, you cannot copy the database.

You didn’t say whether you have access to Tools/Export in the back end of the site?

Oh, I’m sorry – I did say that at first and must have edited it out by accident. Yes, I do have access to Tools/Export on the backend.

Again, much thanks for your time.

In that case, you can export the site’s content into an xml file for safekeeping. Once the exported file has been downloaded, head straight for wordpress.com, open a new account and wp.com site and import the content from the old site into the new with this file.

Esmi, thank you so much. Does the exported file contain whatever’s on the database? (And what exactly is on the database? Is it anything I need to care about?)

The export file contains all of the text content and links to all currently used images on the old site. In order for the images to be imported into a new site, you need to run the import before the old site disappears. The text content will remain intact & usable in the export file irrespective of whether the old site is live or not.

what exactly is on the database

Everything that is on the site – text, images, plugin settings,. theme settings. Pretty much everything apart from the engine of the site which is contained in the WordPress scripts.

As the content creator, your primary interest, I assume, would be in the text content and the media (image) files, yes?

Yes, exactly. I guess if a copy of those things still exists on the server side I’ll just have to live with that.

Is there a way to completely shutter a blog on WordPress.Org? Ideally, I’d export everything and plop it onto WordPress.com or something, and then shut everything down over here.

WordPress.org doesn’t hold any information on your site so you don’t need to worry about that.
