What theme is better for a html/css developer to use to build client websites? (6 posts)

Hi, I'm a web designer but very new to WordPress. I normally use html, css, and jquery to build websites for my clients. I want to go the way of customizing a child theme rather than building my own themes. I'm really struggling with finding a good basic starting theme which is ideal for a web developer to begin with rather than a user. Most of the themes seem to be ideal for USERS who don't have html or css skills, packed with options, variations and workarounds. I'm trying to customise "Pinboard" but it seems to have quite convoluted structuring. Can anyone suggest a theme which is an ideal starting point for a developer to build on?

  3. I would look at Twenty Twelve. It' very well done and since it's from the Theme Team at Automattic, you know that the code is amazing.

You may also want to look at underscores.me. Underscores or _s for short is the starter theme that was created by Automattic and they use it for most themes on WordPress.com.

Additionally, if you speak to other developers, you'll find that there's a huge cult of genesis developers. Genesis is a framework and allows you to build child themes very easily - http://www.studiopress.com/themes/genesis

I started working with WordPress a very long time ago and didn't know about Genesis and _s has only been around for a few months. I use my own theme which I've made available on github. Feel free to have a look at it if you want. - https://github.com/crondeau/BLM-Basic-Starter-WordPress-Theme-HTML5

Commander will work for you!! may be you can have a look at it here:

  5. Responsive is another good option for child themeing.
It's free on the WordPress repo.

It has a huge showcase and amazing support forum.
