The category slug is the link title of your category. This is separate from the name of your category. For example, if your Category is named “Miscellaneous”, but the slug is “general”, then the Miscellaneous category will be located at domain.com/wordpress/archives/category/general/ .

so its like a sub category name?

    can you leave it blank?

or if you cant.. what do you normally put in there? the same as your category name?

WP takes care of it, but if you have a category name this long:
    qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm
you can change it to abc

No, if you leave it blank, your category will have no URL. Basically, it’s just like Moshu said. The going trend is to have the category slug be the same as the category name. But, if your category is named “This is the category in which I complain about various things,” then category’s URL would be domain.com/wordpress/archives/category/general/this-is-the-category-in-which-I-complain-about-various-things/ . By changing that category’s slug to “rants”, you can change the category’s URL to domain.com/wordpress/archives/category/rants/ , but the category’s name will still be “This is the category in which I complain about various things.”

If the Category slug is different than the category name, which will Technorati Tags pick up?

    The category name.
