What should I do? My site is seriously broken since I cannot do basic stuff (14 posts)

This started out as a post about themes. But I think it goes beyond this since the question I posted in the theme area went unanswered. This is because I cannot even upload a theme.

So, seeing that this must be more serious, I looked at WP advanced. But only moderators can post there.

So I am posting this here, now, in the miscellaneous area.

I cannot upload a wordpress theme

I found a great theme that I want for our Zumiak web site.
I have downloaded it. I have other updates to do but I want to do the theme first.
When I go to "Add Themmes", and click to "Upload Themes", the options I expect to find are not there.

I made this youtube video of this. Please help.

Which version of WordPress do you have installed (I think 3.9.2 according to the video)?

Also, can you still do other things (like upload plugins, make a page, make a post, change settings, etc.)?

    When did this happened?

Did you make any big changes before this happened?

If you have other WordPress websites, is this happening on them?

    It is WordPress 3.9.2.
I can make a page. I can make a post.
When I try to upload a plug in zip file I get this:

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, root and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

    I can change settings.

This is the second time I have installed on the web site. The first time, I forgot the admin password and I completely reinstalled wordpress and had the web hosting provider zero out the database. I suspect maybe I should be talking to them. Is that right?

Have you tried reinstalling wordpress 3.9.2?

I guess that is the next step to do. But, before we jump into this, let me ask a few questions.

#1. The tech support I chatted with from the hosting provider suggested there might be some setting she needs to do on the back end. What might that be?

#2. If I can install plug ins and do everything else, why can't I try manually configuring a theme? Is it possible to do that?

If these questions don't lead to success, I guess it is time to reinstall the whole thing once more.

#1 I don't think there is anything the host provider can do but reset your website.

#2 If you put a theme directly into your website files, do you get an error? This may be a way around it.

We will figure this out eventually.

  8. Turn off ALL your plugins on your site and try again,

Matthew, that is interesting. So I do an FTP replace of all the php and css code related to the theme? Is that what you mean?

Mika, I turned off all the plugins and I still could not see any options on the upload theme page.

You download the theme that you want to use to your document (on your computer) and then go into your FTP and under wp-content > themes make a new folder named whatever you want. Then unzip the theme that you downloaded into your documents and add the contents into the folder that you just made.

After that log into your website and go to the appearance > themes section in your dashboard. Is the theme there?

Great! It still doesn't solve the problem with the theme installer not working.

I can pick from the ones that are there, according this one, and use it. What do you suggest we do to approach the problem of not being able to upload new themes. This was a round-about way of getting a theme onboard so I can use it though.

I would wait until WordPress 4.0 is released. It is due to be released August 27, 2014.
