Support » Fixing WordPress » What kind of regular maintenance should I do?

  • From time to time my wordpress installation has trouble. I get 500 errors, or “failure to make a database connection” messages, or things like that.

Is there any sort of regular maintenance I should do to prevent this?

I have assumed that it’s my hosting company’s responsibility to keep their database server running well, but perhaps there are things I should be doing on my end.

    Any suggestions?

    Greg

  • Sounds like you are correct in your assumptions. It is not normal to get connection errors or 500 errors on any sort of regular basis. That speaks to the quality of hosting.

Really the only thing you should be doing are optimizing your database, which can be done from phpmyadmin on your server, or there are DB plugins that can handle it.

But that is for performance things, the connection issues are most likely related to your host

    Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately when I have an intermittent problem and contact my hosting company, I inevitably get the “we are unable to replicate the issue, please delete your cookies” kind of nonsense.

Is there something specific I can ask the hosting company to do or check on?
