What is WordPress? (15 posts)

I have been having great fun creating a "theme" or making a "template" or am I just formatting a "Page": that's just it, I don't really know.

I took the default theme and ripped out most of it to try and see what bits worked where. I took the loop out of "page.php" as I don't see the point. I made my own includes and put the CCS in these. Things still seem to work, but am I still using WordPress , just how much can you hack before you have a different beast. Can you change the code in the wordpress directory ?

Allot of WP seems deliberately obfuscated. No mater how many times I read "how to create a horizontal menu" it did not make any sense . In the end I just stuck in some href="?page_id=11" which seems to work , is this a permalink ?

Is there anyone who can guide to the main trail ?!

That is where you would enter your link. The # is placed there just to hold the space.
    for example:
if you wanted this portion of the menu to link to workpress you would do so like=
    line in tutorial <a href="#">
your code with link <a href="http://www.wordpress.org">

In answer to the title of this post, "What is WordPress?"

It is a pan-dimensional thought recorder, through the aid of circuits, wire, fiber, finger exercises and two mice in a squeaky wheel.

The point is what href do you use to get to a page.

I could not find any docs on this so just copied what wp_list_pages() produces ie href="?page_id=1" and so on.

Is this using the mystical "Permalink" concept ?

"It is a pan-dimensional thought recorder, through the aid of circuits, wire, fiber, finger exercises and two mice in a squeaky wheel."

    Fairly accurate.

trg, you can link to any Page with the usual a href anchor tag:
example.com/?page_id=XX (if using the default permalinks)
    or
example.com/my-first-page (if using the "nice permalinks" and using the Page's slug)

Can't get href="page-slug" to work but no matter so long as I'm doing something vaguely legal.

But back to my original point what is the essential WordPress process?

What is the minimum that a theme/template/page needs to be valid?

What bits can be hacked without too much retribution?.

    Include wp-blog-header.php in <head>
    and The Loop.

    That's about it I'd say?

Do I have to include the loop in "page.php"

    Can I not just have "the_post(); the_content('');"

    Thanks for your help.

No trg. That wouldn't get you too far. Have you poked through the codex?

It works for me in the sense that it brings up the page.

xampplite has been crashing occasionally but I dont think it is related.
