What is the Purpose in Twenty Fourteen Theme of -168px Margins?

    I adjusted the width of the Twenty Fourteen theme so that it would show more text. But this caused the images to overflow outside the content area. I believe this is caused by various instances in which one sees margin-right: 168px. What is the purpose of these specifications?
