• What is the best option to the Picasa slideshows that are currently on the Homepage of this test site?
    http://www.ts-export.org/

    Needs to be:
Easy to set up and use
Able to display multiple slideshows on the same site
Compatible with Thesis theme, Thesis Play Skin and other plugins
Gets images from galleries that I set up – not pages and posts
Allows click from the images to a URL that I specify
Able to loop continuously, if I select this option
    Configurable for speed, effects etc.
Doesn’t take viewers away from the site, like Picasa

    Any sugggestions?

  • That all depends on your preference and level of skill…

Do you want a plugin or do you want to code your own?

And please, I’m not trying to be patronising below, it’s just that you’re quite specific above and usually the only way to get everything that you want is to go bespoke. I doubt that there is a plugin available that will do everything you’ve described.

So as I see it your options are…

    WP PLUGIN >>
There must be dozens of slideshow plugins for WordPress to cater for almost every need. Check out the Extend/Plugins section on this site, or google for it.

    NON-WP PLUGIN / APPLET >>
If not WordPress specific (but probably needing some knowledge of HTML and/or PHP and Javascript) then there are hundreds if not thousands of slideshow ‘plugins’ or applets available out there. They’ll mostly use Javascript of some form or other (jQuery / MooTools etc.) or some may use PHP but these are more of a “single slide per page” used for incrementing through a gallery.

I recently found this fantastic, ultra light weight and simple slideshow [only 8 lines of code!] which uses jQuery (included with WordPress). As well as others — by Jon Raasch or on sixrevisions. Again google is your friend here.

    CODE >>
Or if you can code then why not write your own, as the ‘Simplest jQuery Slideshow’ tutorial above shows, this doesn’t need to be complicated. It all depends what you need it to do!

Thanks gr1zzly for a comprehensive and thoughtful reply.

I haven’t thought of writing or adapting the code. I’m OK with basic html stuff but have never done css or used jQuery.

With Thesis you can get by without knowing css just by using a skin and pasting the mods in as code snippets in the custom.css file (which is what I’ve been doing). Over time I’ll probably start to learn it.

The simplest jQuery slideshow looks interesting, though I may want a bit more functionality and see if I can get it “out of the box” before trying to write one myself or getting someone to write it for me.

The problem is that there are so many WP and non-WP options around its hard to know which one to go with. The only way would be to just start trying them out, though I thought I’d ask the advice of people who may have already tried a few and could make some recommendations.

Does anyone know an “out of the box” solution to what I’m wanting to do?

    Thanks again for the help.
