Hello, my first post here, feel like a stranger here.

I’ve spent a lot of hours learning this wordpress.

But one thing that I CAN NOT FIND anywhere is this-

Say I am using 2012 theme. I already have my 2012 child set up.

I understand that to change the color or the text size or the border or width, etc, that you change all that in your STYLE.CSS file in child theme.

What I don’t understand is this.

So you have your child theme activated in your WORDPRESS DASHBOARD. On the left of DASHBOARD is all the options of posts/media/pages/comments/appearence/etc…

Out of everything on the left in your dashboard, what is safe to change?

Obviously posts and pages, right? and media and comments?

How about APPEARANCE? is it safe to change the options your child activated theme gives you there??? Like it lets you change the text color of the title and lets you change the background color. Is it safe to make those changes there or will they be lost when parent theme updates?

Now my main question. What about WIDGETS and MENUS???? Is it safe to add widgets there or will it cause problems when updates? Is it safe to create custom menus there? And by saying custom menus, I just mean the simple stuff it lets you create in DASHBOARD. Like moving around menu order, what menus to include, then what widget areas to place it in, etc.

I hope I made myself clear, lol, b.c I searched for like an hour trying to answer this.

    Thanks much in advance!

edit= also, is it safe to change templates on a page per page basis? Like have home page be default and 2nd page be right sidebar half page, and 3rd page be full width single column, etc? And I mean change them in dashboard under pages when you create your page there.

    Thanks

    Yes, most definitely

This should be ok to change, worse comes to worse, if you change these, they may get overwritten by your child theme. Regardless of this, if you change something, it’s ok, nothing will break.

    Yes, add/delete/move widgets and menus.

is it safe to change templates on a page per page basis?

    Yes as well.

One thing to note is that in your child theme, you don’t need to copy ALL of the styles from the parent. Some folks copy the whole thing over and then make changes. You only need the stuff that’s different, so your child theme css, could only have 2 lines in it.

    Good luck.

Thanks Christine, Appreciate you taking the time to help!

    I guess I was over-thinking everything.

    But I can’t help it.

But one last thing. So the child theme is the one that is activated in your dashboard.

So say I delete two widgets from my home page under APPEARANCE/WIDGETS in DASHBOARD.

I’m not understanding what file this changes. Does it change the style.css file of the child theme, or of the parent or is it something else?

Because if it changes the style.css of the parent, then wouldn’t it just be written over on udpdate? And if it changes the .css of the child, shouldn’t it appear in style.css? Or shouldn’t you have to manually figure out how to delete a widget with css code and input into child style.css file?

Basically, when you make changes in the dashboard under appearance/widgets/etc , what files are effected and what directories?

    Thanks again.

All that stuff is stored in the database, not in physical files. You’re safe, go ahead and play.

Consider using a plugin like BackWPUp if you’re still a bit uneasy about it.
