What is Mijireh and do I need it?

Hi,
When I went to set up my payment options I see that if i want to have the option to accept credit cards it goes through Mijireh. I am not sure what that is and or if i need it? Is this the only way to accept credit cards if I don’t want to use pay pal?
I see that it charges .50cent per transaction, my products are pretty cheap so this turns out to be quite a bit…
I might not fully understand, since this is the first time i’m setting up a cart. But shouldn’t i be able to make my shopping cart PCI compatible by getting a SSL Cert. and dedicated IP and just connect my merchant (my bank) directly to for example Authorize.net?
