This used to be a fantastic plugin but I have upgraded it on a couple of sites and not only does it lose the testimonials but when you add them back in now there doesn’t seem to be the feature to only show testimonials that fall within a certain character length. Instead it truncates all testimonials with an ellipsis … complete rubbish!!! Such a pity.

Latest site upgrade to a new server shows blanks although the testimonials are still visble in Admin. Currently using 0.2.9.

Patsky, Your plugin version 0.2.9 is way behind the current released version which is 3.2.0 . Testimonials Widget 3.0 is a major overhaul without backwards compliance of over 80 changes. Please read the link below for the changes and helpers intended to help you update quickly.

I have read the link below – it makes zero sense to me. People use plugins like this BECAUSE they aren’t coders.

‘This is a major overhaul without backwards compliance of over 80 changes.’ What does this mean – Without backwards compliance???? Sounds to me like ‘upgrade and everything disappears’ which is exactly what happened when I upgraded the plugin on another site. I had to reinput dozens of testimonials and then discovered that a feature I had relied on earlier – only displaying items which fell within a character limit – was no longer working. Instead longer testimonials were now truncated – what good is that!

You had a perfectly good plugin and as far as I’m concerned it’s now completely broken.

    patsky,

I’m very sorry about the your frustrations and upgrade trouble. You’re coming from code that’s several years old and has since been revised drastically for improved performance and capabilities.

At this point, please deactivate and delete Testimonials Widget. Then install and activate https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/testimonials-widget.2.19.9.zip. This will migrate your 0.2.9 code to the 2.0 format.

Afterward, update to Testimonials Widget 3.2.0 as normal or via installing https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/testimonials-widget.3.2.0.zip directly.

Well I generally work on the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ principle. It would be useful if somewhere in plain English there was an instruction about going from 0.2.9 to version 2.x.x first.

I eventually discovered that it was Tags on the older version which was causing the blank widget output. When I removed that they displayed but that wasn’t the answer because I needed the tags…

Anyway, I have now finally updated and it seems to be working. I do miss seeing the testimonial text in the backend. It was beautifully simple once but the widget now has so many options it makes it hard to set up. Yes I know there are the defaults… sorry I’m whinging but it’s taken 3 days to get this working again.

Edit: PS Thanks for the support though…
