This is all I could find about what happens to attachments:
    ——————————————————–
    Supported MIME Types
Add just the type (not the subtype). Text, Video, Audio, Image and Multipart are always supported. Put each type on a single line
    Banned File Names
Put each file name on a single line.Files matching this list will never be posted to your blog. You can use wildcards such as *.xls, or *.* for all files
    Attachment icon set
    Attachment icon size (in pixels)
    Attachment template
Note that this template are only used if the attachment is not “inline” or if the email type is “plain”
    ——————————————————-
How are they handled and where are they put?

Attachments are saved in the media library if they are permitted file types. WordPress has restrictions and you can add further restrictions through Postie.

    See https://wordpress.com/support/accepted-filetypes/

Inline images are placed as directed by the markup.

All other attachments are listed at the top or bottom of the post depending on the Image Location setting (affects all attachments, not just images).

You can use the Image Template and/or the Attachment template to control the markup of the attachments (except inline images).
