I’m curious about this — what is the xmlrpc.php file typically used for in a WordPress installation, and what happens if it is deleted?

I know that it is used for trackbacks, but what other functions of a typical blog are related to this file?

  • Pingbacks (*not* trackbacks) and remote posting. Like using an external posting client, such as ScribeFire.

Version 2.6 of WordPress will have an option to disable the XMLRPC without removing it, for those who don’t use remote posting.

    Thanks, Otto.

Having read many of your posts before, I’m pretty sure your reply is entirely comprehensive, but I’ll ask one more question, just in case (and forgive my ignorance about this…):

Does it affect, in any way, RSS feeds?
