I was surprised to see an update to this plugin and thought, maybe they moved the improved importer into production.

WordPress Importer Redux

I’m guessing the answer is that is has been abandoned, it’s too bad because these functionality improvements are really lacking in the current core plugin.

The Importer Redux project was worked on by some contributors, primarily those at Human Made.

Unfortunately the works stalled and has not been merged/proposed to be merged into the core importer plugin yet.
