What do I actually need to backup?

I’m using UpdraftPlus to try and backup my blog. I was getting an error message which suggested that I didn’t have enough space in my hosting account. I have checked with 1and1 and it looks like I have 2553MB left. Does this suggest that my backup is taking up a lot of space?
When doing my backup I was including plugins, themes, uploads & other directories. Do I actually need to backup these? Where is all the content of my blog posts held, i.e. the words, is this in the database? And what about images?
Just as a test I did a backup this morning of just the Database and it only took about a minute and worked fine with no errors.
So I’m not sure if I need all the other stuff. If the worst did happen and I needed to restore my blog would I just be able to re-add the theme and plugins manually?
What content does everyone else backup?

Hi,
All posts, pages and settings are stored in the database.
The Plugins and Themes section of the backup store the actual plugin and theme files.The Uploads section contains the image and other media files.
Please could you send us a copy of the latest backup log? This can be found in the Existing Backups tab. We can then check how large the backups are, and if there any any other errors occurring.
The contents will be too long to post here, but you can use an online service such as Pastebin, and post the link here.

When I ran the very first backup and included the plugins, themes and uploads the log file was huge, I wasn’t even able to use PasteBin as it said the file was too big. I’m wondering if it is the images that are taking up all the space as I have over 600 blog posts all with at least 2 images.

Hi Laura,
The log file shows the backup completing successfully.
Depending on the size of the images, it is likely that the backups that include the Uploads section are quite large.
If you have Dropbox, you can upload the log file for a full backup there, and post the sharing link here.

It appears that there was an error while creating the Uploads backup.
It appears that there may not be enough room on the hosting account to hold the backup.Please could you check how much available quota is left in the hosting account?

I’m not really sure if I need to be backing up my images (I’m assuming these are what is taking up all the space, could this be the case?). I have all the images stored on my PC, but assume if the worst happened and unneeded to recreate my blog I’d need to re-add them post by post.

Hi Laura,
It appears that there is not enough space in the hosting account to fit the Uploads backup, which is ~2263MB.
When backing up each section, UpdraftPlus requires enough space to keep temporary files, and the final backup file. As such we usually recommend having at least twice the amount of total space in the hosting account as the size of the site.
If you have a separate backup of the images, and no new images are being added (e.g. by users of the sites), then it may not be necessary to backup the Uploads.
You would need to manually restore the images in this case, by uploading them to the site via FTP.Thanks @dnutbourne I think I’m going to backup everything apart from the Uploads. Fingers crossed I never need to worry about uploading my images anyway, but if the worst happens I do have them saved and it’s only me who adds them.
