what best way to move my WP from a subdomain to the main domain?

  • Hi. Currently, one of my blogs is under the subdomain
    personal.al-rasid.com
I want it to be the main blog, and for that I want to make the domain http://www.al-rasid.com point to it, and that it appear on http://www.al-rasid.com rather than personal.al-rasid.com

What is the best way to do it, with maintaining SEO ranking and search engine archiving?

    Any other tips are appreciated

  • backup, import and export should work since it’s the same platform. perhaps other might have a better suggestion.

Thank you.. but are you sure my friend? I seriously dont think I have to backup anything.. I dont want to MOVE the WP installation.. the changes I suppose are to be done on the Cpanel siteurl / homeurl level, and the home path of the WP installation, and nothing else.

    Any body please?

just pointing the domain to a sub domain will lead to problems

I would suggest actually moving the install to root and using redirects for url’s

    Thank you Samuel.
By root you mean the public_html folder right?

Or maybe you mean the folder which is connected to the main domain al-rasid.com ?

So I should move the content of public_html/alrasid/personal (which is the blog on the subdomain) to public_html/alrasid … ??

    Then what?

Also, is there any difference between doing this (moving of files and changing url), and between simply making the al-rasid.com domain point to the folder of the blog??

move to the public_html folder as that is the root

then set up your 301 redirects so folks who are bookmarked will be sent to the new location and the search engines don’t lose you
you can do this with a plugin (easiest)
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/

    or with .htaccess rules

please follow all instructions about backing up files and database

Thank you again. Well my hosting main domain is tollab.org , and I dont want the blog to be accessable via it, but via al-rasid.com , which currently points to public_html/alrasid.
I guess now you would agree that I have to move the contents of the WP blog to public_html/alrasid rather than to public_html.. right?

After I install the plugin and configure it accordingly, do I have to keep it running infinitely or what?

ok – yes that would be correct

run the plugin long enough to be sure you are being found correctly by search engines – though it doesn’t put any real load on the site

Okay.. any other tips or things that I need to be aware of that might affect negatively the website after moving if not done?

I appreciate your help and quick responses 🙂

the only other thing I can think of is your image url’s may need to be changed – if you have any

if so, just run this once after moving

Fantastic.. I am deeply grateful for your help.. lets just hope everything goes right 🙂

Oh I forgot this.. please answer it if you could

http://www.al-rasid.com is just another subdomain. The domain is al-rasid.com.

You need to set the virtual hosts up so that http://www.al-rasid.com is the ‘main’ domain and personal.al-rasid.com has a permanent 301 rewrite to http://www.al-rasid.com. This will preserve your rankings as the search engines will note the change. And while you are at it, do the same for the al-rasid.com domain in case someone forgets the www or the personal. This is best done in the server but can be done in .htaccess of that’s all you have access to.

There may be a plugin that can do all this for you – have a look.

You can leave WP untouched but it is better to change the general settings from the admin page.

Whatever you do, don’t fiddle with the database because the domain is written throughout in serialized or JSON’d format which would require unpacking and repacking. You’ll break it!!

Thank you Loggy. Can u please explain how to “set up the virtual host so that… ” ??

Also, since I am doing all this as a temporary thing untill I create a new interface on al-rasid.com which will direct to the other blogs (on subdomains), perhaps I should not do it all and rather just make the domain al-rasid.com point to the subdomain , or to the folder public_html/alrasid/personal ?
