I have several sites at HostGator.

I tried updating to WF 6.1.1 on one of them but got the “The changes have not yet taken effect…” message. Refreshing the page after 5 minutes had no effect.

In the HostGator cPanel, there is no “PHP Variables Manager icon. Is “PHP Configuration” the same thing?

I went into PHP Configuration, found a public_html folder and a list of my sites, but I see no place to enter a variable name and path.

What direction do you suggest next?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with the same result.

Is this a problem for all HostGator sites or just me?

    Hi,

Sorry for the delay. This may apply to many HostGator sites — our dev team is checking it out and I’ll report back here. It may be similar to SiteGround’s setup steps, but the PHP Configuration option is probably different from the PHP Variables Manager on SiteGround.

The rest of Wordfence should function normally, even if you have not finished the firewall setup.

I’ve been working on this too. I just contacted HostGator support and they walked me through creating a php.ini file I could modify, however when I added the line given it caused a fatal error. When I left the default file for my php version it is fine, and when I tried doing the automatic update method after adding the php.ini file it did nothing new.

I’ve updated other sites on HG that went through fine. Thanks for continuing to look into this.

I hate to pester, but has the team found anything with HostGator?

I have several sites of my own and a couple of clients’ sites to upgrade.

    Hi,

We’ve seen some HostGator accounts with no issues, and some with issues similar to yours. We are working on adding automated setup that may cover these situations too.

We also will have an option in a release shortly, to dismiss the firewall configuration notice if you need to — the firewall can still be active within WordPress without these configuration steps (the configuration steps help it protect against even more attacks), and all of the original Wordfence features will work as usual, even if this step can’t be completed on your host immediately.

Thanks for the info again. I have tried the upgrade on all my HostGator sites. None of them completed the firewall portion successfully.

How will I know when or where to look for the new automated setup that you mentioned?

I manage 9 different WordPress installations at HostGator. After the WAF setup failed on 3 of the sites I started comparing their settings. All of the sites that failed were using PHP 5.2 while those that succeeded were set to at least PHP 5.3. After updating to PHP 5.3 I was able to successfully complete the WAF setup.

@rmeck My issue was on PHP5.4.

However I did notice this morning the Firewall is now in learning mode and just still throwing the false notice that it’s not set up, rather than not being set up at all.

@glsonn, I would assume the notice to look would be when there’s an update for the Wordfence plugin.

@wfmattr Thank you for working so hard on this issue. πŸ™‚

I see that I’m now in the same situation as Wendy__D. PHP5.4, the Firewall in learning mode with the notice still showing.

    Good Afternoon glsoon,

My name is Jonathan H. and I’m our customer service supervisor over at HostGator.com. We were sorry to hear about the trouble with the WordFence plugin and wanted to reach out to see if we might receive a bit more information to check in on this issue and make sure the matter has been fully investigated on our side.

If you could please send an e-mail to feedback@hostgator.com ATTN. Jonathan H. and please include the domain name where this plugin is in use, we’d definitely like to take another look with you. Once we’ve had a chance to review, we’ll gladly update this post with more information that might be helpful to other users.

Thanks for your attention and I’ll be keeping an eye out for your e-mail.

Just an FYI – I have 5-10 sites on HostGator, and I did not have any issue on any of them.

I do recall within the last year or two there was a notice sent out by HostGator about PHP 5.4 and setting it manually, so you could test your site before they upgraded others.

Maybe your sites were manually set to 5.2? Just a thought.

It seems all is well now. WF has updated again to include a Dismiss button for that errant message. All my sites are in learning mode.

    Greetings,

We’ve since received an update from glsonn indicating that the plugin seems to be working fine in learning mode but if we can help take a look at any other issues on our platform, please feel free to update this thread and we’ll be glad to take another look.
