I have been relying on WP Backup for the last 5 years every day receiving a backup of my site. Lately because of the size of my site I get the following message Unfortunately, the backup file was too large to attach to this email.
You can download the backup file by clicking the link below
:I have not had to resort to accessing the restore facility, that is until today.

My site has not just been hacked into; every file has been removed and in their place there is a spurious link to PayPal which is a SCAM to access vulnerable visitors to my site entering their PayPal details so the bandits can milk their private accounts. They use a piece of opensource software called ANONISMA which shows them how to install the scam and to back the instructions up there are a number of YouTube videos devoted to setting up the scam. I have been able to find out who the scammer was but what can I do with that information. However the purpose of this message is to say that because all the files have been removed from my site this link I receive every day is totally useless all I get by linking on it is a 404 error page. My fault I know for believing a WPplugin would actually carry out its promise. Even worse the site also has SiteLock on it who boldly claim: Protect your site from hackers! That is two pieces of software who fail to say we will protect your site until you need to then sorry we do not carry out our promises.
If anyone has any idea how to get a site of over 100 pages back without a backup that does not work I would appreciate hearing from you.

  • I’m so sorry to hear your misfortune, and I’m no expert, but I believe this plugin stores a copy of the last backup on your server.
Most reputable hosting companies have a back up copy of your site that is less than 30 days old — I know Bluehost stores daily, weekly and monthly copies. Worst that could happen is they charge you for restoring a backup, but often it can be requested for free.
So even if your server was hacked / wiped / infected, the backups are stored elsewhere on a different server, not in your account.
Try calling your hosting company to proceed.

Thanks for trying to help Social Chic it is appreciated. Unfortunately I am on a shared server and the site is too large for their weekly back up hence using WPback up. They have been a great help to try to sort it out but do not have a copy of a backup. When you say it stores a file on your server not sure what you mean, I should explain I am an old wrinkly and you young chaps are much cleverer than me. I work from a home PC not an office server if that is what you mean.

My other sites are a lot smaller and are not subject to the large file rule and therefore are backed up by my hosting company.

Many thanks again it is appreciated any help is wonderful

The ‘server’ I’m referring to is the actual shared server at the hosting company. Can you access your c-panel or does your hosting company give you access?
If yes, then log into your account, find the c-panel, and go to the file manager where all the files belonging to your account are located.

Assuming the hacker didn’t wipe your entire account and just messed with some of the files then:
In the wp-content folder, at the top of the list, is a folder where this plugin stores the backups: it is called ‘backupwordpress-##########-backups’. (Those ‘####’s represent whatever letters & numbers the plugin randomly named the folder.)

Look inside that folder and you should find zip files that contain the database and zip files that contain the database & files. Find the latest date, download to your computer

    sorry, hit the wrong button!
download to your computer and proceed from there to restore.

    Hoping that helps.

Thanks Social Chic but they removed all of the files put a folder in called Manage which is how I was able to find out who had ripped my files. The hosting company thought of that also great minds and all that.

    Thanks again

    go to the website:

    https://archive.org/

if yours is a big site, the chances are high that archive.org will have noticed it and created a record of all or most of your site content in their WAYBACK MACHINE which you will be able to copy and paste into your restored site

thats the manual way, the semi automated way of doing it is to hire someone from fiverr who will download the files from archive.org for you and present them as a zip file for you to upload

here are several suppliers offering to download and actually do the restore for you too for $5:

Many thanks one_one that is a great piece of advice I can see most of my files and they appear to be up to just before the Hacker decided to play. So I can download them and up load them to construct a fresh site this will save some of my grey hair falling out. your help is greatly appreciated.

    regards

So glad you were able to get some help from another forum member. Unfortunately there’s not a lot we can do to help you out since you’re talking about a completely different plugin from our own 🙁

WP Backup is a different plugin entirely.

I’m so sorry for the trouble you experienced, though. 🙁
