    Hi,

I’m so sorry to be what’s probably the 50th person informing about slowness on their sites after starting to use the plug-in, but I can’t seem to figure it out. The change is very significant and seems to have occurred on both sites.

    Things I’ve tried:
    – Enable the .htaccess redirect option
    – Read the articles/FAQ on the topic
    – Using a caching plug-in (cleared the cache)
    – Using a clean-up plug-in

Is there anything else I can do? It’s affecting my results.

Sorry again and thanks a ton!

As you mention the articles on this subject, I expect you have also read this:
    https://really-simple-ssl.com/knowledge-base/really-simple-ssl-make-site-slower/
    Main points:
    – Regardless of plugin usage, SSL always causes a site to load slower, as the server needs to encrypt the data. SSL has less impact on a fast server.
    – Speed should be measured without the redirect, over https directly
    – Third party resources can greatly impact your site speed

You can always disable the mixed content fixer in settings/ssl to see the difference. The mixed content fixer is the only part of the plugin active on the front-end.

The most important items here are that you should disregard the redirection in the speed measurements, minimize third party scripts if possible, and take into account your server speed.

Yes, I did read the article. I have to add that I didn’t only measure the speed using a tool, I don’t need to; the sites have become extremely slow just browsing around them.

I’ll admit that I’m a writer with literally no clue about most other website stuff. What does disabling the mixed content fixer actually do? And how do I identify third party scripts? I assume that’s stuff like Facebook widgets, but what else? Lastly, how do I figure out if a slow server is part of the problem?

If you disable the mixed content fixer in settings/ssl, the plugin will not fix http images, css and js file to https. This can lead to losing the green lock in your address bar.

If you disable it and the site speed stays the same, you will know it’s either caused by server speed or by third party scripts.

Third party scripts can be anything. They have only one thing in common: they’re not loaded from your own site, but from another domain.

I am also having the same issues with site loading slow after enabling SSL. Where can I find the “mixed content fixer”? Is that where it says “auto replace mixed content”? I just uncheck it? I’m using the free version of the plugin. Thanks!

    Yes, that’s the one.

I would also check for third party services loading on your site. This can considerably slow down a site on SSL.
