We had the Wordfence free version installed on one of two sites that were hacked last Wednesday. In the past I have received emails from Wordfence alerting me when their have been attempts made on our websites, but this time I didn’t see anything. The attack seemed to be a ransomware attack. I am not sure if Wordfence is able to protect against that type of attack, but it is a little worrisome to me that there was no protection. Just looking for some guidance on the next steps to take. We have been in touch with our webhost and also Cloudflare, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to at least notify you that there was an issue.

    Hi kairig,
how did you notice that the site was hacked? What were the symptoms? Ransomware basically means that someone has encrypted or deleted data of some sort and that they demand money in order to return it. As long as your hosting provider keeps backups they should be able to restore the site to a point before it was attacked. Of course, you would also need to have a look at access logs and other traces they may have left behind to figure out how they gained access.

Wordfence protect against a large amount of different attacks but it is possible that you encountered a brand new type of exploit or it is possible that there was some security issue on your server. If you find any more information about how your site was hacked, please let us know. Thanks!
