 * Good chance his server just went down and he (or his hosting company) haven’t
   noticed and rebooted it yet.
 * Backups are a good thing to have though if it becomes something more serious.

 * Its been down for a couple of weeks now, I have tried to contact them with no
   joy.
    Hindsight is a good thing, I knew nothing about backing up etc until it
   went down.

 * I cannot back up as I cannot view the page, nor log in via wordpress.

 * Looks like the server is still there. Sorry this happened to you. If they are
   gone for good it is start over time.

 * So no way of contacting anybody about sorting it?

 * Ahh, I just clicked on the second link, it appears the server is there but your
   designer’s website is also gone.
 * No contact in a couple weeks probably isn’t a good sign. Here’s their whois information
   if that helps you out any.

 * Just so you know in the future, always keep an off-site backup of your website…
   backing it up on the same server it’s on would be of no use in your situation.
 * I use the free UpdraftPlus plugin along with Dream Objects cloud storage for
   my site and my clients. If you just have a small WordPress site a free dropbox
   account should suffice for storing your backups.

 * SO am I right in saying, that a host can go and close and take every website
   with it and nobody can do a thing about it, nor can they get their website that
   they have paid for back??
    This is a right mess, I am losing work everyday from
   this. I rely on this website.

 * Hi Scott,
 * Yes unfortunately that’s correct. I’m not familiar with UK laws regarding this
   type of thing. But in the US your only option at that point would probably be
   some type of civil litigation which can be more trouble than it’s worth.
 * If you had a good backup of your site I could have it up and running on a new
   server/web host in an instance.
 * You should always have a backup of your site for this reason and numerous others.
 * I would suggest learning from my mistake, move on and get your site going again
   on a new server and setup a solution to back everything up on a regular basis.
 * Dave
