Website goes off line &#8211; I fix by renaming the htacess file?

Do mean it’s continually going down with a 500 error, and each time renaming the .htaccess file fixes it?

yeah the site goes down and leaves 500 error, I then rename the htaccess file & like magic a new correct htaccess file appears & all is fixed.

the fix could last for months, weeks even twice in an hour?

Right. So, what is adding those 300 lines of code? Any clues there?

If something is adding code to that file, then it’s possible that it added code which broke your site. Simple as that, really.

heres the thing…. months ago before this happened I did have 300+ lines of code, but not now? example, before this happened (months ago) I added code to the htaccess file so my site was Gzip enabled, at a time when there was 300+ lines of code, now the code is only 10 lines and the gzip code is not even in the new htaccess file, yet my site does test positive for being Gzip enabled? but the code is not there?

Right, something in that 300 lines was causing the problem, we have to find out what was adding them. Any clues from the lines about what could be doing it?

WordPress’s default .htaccess file is only https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Creating_and_editing_.28.htaccess.29

It’s possible that your hosting provider enabled Gzip at the server level, so now you don’t have to switch it on via .htaccess.

Noting BEGIN W3TC Browser Cache and END W3TC Browser Cache in there, I’d say that https://wordpress.org/plugins/w3-total-cache/ is responsible for adding it.
