I’m trying to build my own website and learning about code and such, and I changed some of the code in Appearance –> Editor –> Background Images.php and added in some code that I thought would enable me to change the background image. I hit update, then realized the website was down, so I deleted the code and hit update again, and the entire website locked up. I can’t even log-in; it’s not simply a matter of accessing the site online. I can’t log-in to view/change anything.

I contacted a2hosting (my platform), and they were basically like, we don’t know. See their response below:

‘Unfortunately you would need to contact the developer of the theme you were attempting to edit the code on as this is being caused by the below Parse error in the theme file.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/scottmcn/public_html/wp-content/themes/tracks/licenses/background-images.php on line 146’

The theme was one of the basic WordPress themes that were free to use. I can’t even see which I was using since I now can’t even log-in to the admin portal. All I get is a screen that says, ….page isn’t working. Unable to handle this request. HTTP Error 500.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I just found which theme it is: TRACKS.

Should I be contacting their support instead?

Download a fresh version of the Tracks theme here: https://downloads.wordpress.org/theme/tracks.1.50.zip

Extract the files and locate the background-images.php file from the /licenses/ directory.

Log in to your cPanel or whatever hosting panel your host provides for you to access your site files. If you can’t find the login details (url, username, password) ask your host.

Once you’re in then use the file manager feature to navigate through to the /licences/ directory via /home/scottmcn/public_html/wp-content/themes/tracks/licenses/. Delete the existing background-images.php file and upload your clean version to that directory.

Once you are up and running again create a child theme where you can more safely make modifications as they will not be overwritten when you update the theme.

Repair/replace /wp-content/themes/tracks/licenses/background-images.php file using FTP , or your web-host’s cPanel or whatever file management application your host provides (no Dashboard access required).
