website defender/better wp security

Hi I am having a problem with these 2 plugins namely I believe it is website defender as when I disable it with ftp I get my site back and login page back. but also when I alter all of the permissions as per recommendations I also lose my site. Every time I disable with ftp I can login but to check the problem I have to log out. I done lots of work on my site last night and over the last weeks and I have a back up recently but can’t restore it. well it is not so easy with my sql etc. site is helpyaself.com
