Hi, I was making some adjustments to my website http://www.musicholidayitaly.com (Theme=Twentyeleven)
when it crashed – ie after hitting the Update button, it just sat there doing nothing. I then closed the browser with the intention of logging in again, but was unable even to access the login page.

I called webhosts Godaddy, and after an hour’s investigation they told me the problem was due to my “Input/Output Usage” spiking. They said this must be because my website was “not optimised” but could give no further help or information.

As this website is very simple with only 15 pages and nothing fancy like streaming video it seems strange that I should hit any kind of limit. Can you offer any help with what I can do to “optimise” the site – whatever that means!

    Thanks, Gil

That was happening while your update was running. Try it now. I have had the same problem with Godaddy.

Yes the problem seems to have fixed itself now. But is there anything I should be doing (or should not be doing) to avoid the same thing happening again?

Also can you suggest what GoDaddy meant by saying I should “optimise” my site. Bear in mind I am a beginner and know nothing!

    Thanks again, Gil

There’s not much you can do about the I/O usage, depending on what your upgrading, patience can be a virtue. You can upgrade to a higher resource level with GoDaddy and that may help. Next time you do an upgrade, login to your CPanel and watch the resources on the left side.
There are some plugin’s that you can use for optimizing your site, I don’t use them myself, but read the documentation and the reviews before you choose one. Make sure it is up to date also.

The only times I have I/O usage issues is when I am updating a lot of stuff or WP itself. Just FYI.

When you say “Next time you upgrade ….” did you mean UPDATE (in WordPress. Or were you referring to a GoDaddy upgrade?

GoDaddy also suggested the Twentyeleven theme might be the problem as it is (in their words)”pretty old now”. Are you aware of any issues with this Theme?

Next time you UPDATE anything on your site, watch your resouces. I really need to be clearer. Your right, UPDATES refer to your site. Sorry about the confusion.
BTW, I upgraded my hosting to level 2 and am much happier. But I am running 9 sites.

Horsepucky. They just want to sell you something.

    [@kmessinger – LOL (sorry, couldn’t resist):)!]

@gjetley – sorry for the comment, but really, that’s pretty hard to believe if you have a very basic site. Twentyeleven works just fine, but maybe, just for testing, switch to a more recent twenty-something theme to see if that makes any difference.

They did sell me something! Their Sitelock product which supposedly will protect against nasty infiltrations and unauthorised goings on, which (according to them) might also be contributing to the problem. Was that necessary or was I hoodwinked? (I’m so trusting …)

Thanks for your help guys. Going to bed now as 01.30 here where I am, but look forward to your replies when I get up later! Gil

Well, security is arguably useful, but really, hosts should provide a secure server environment for all sites, and there are free WP plugins you can use to increase the security of your WP site. This article has some good info about securing your site:

Thanks for all this info guys. I guess the lesson to learn is ask the experts first 🙂 Think we can close this now. Till the next problem ….
