Web Stories Have Stopped Working with 500 Error

    Web Stories have stopped working and display a white page.

    This page isn’t working

    x is currently unable to handle this request.

    HTTP ERROR 500

    The editor works, but nothing else. You cannot preview, copy-paste the link, or click the link from a post or menu. Everything goes to a 500 error.

    I have tried disabling plugins one at a time, until everything was disabled.

    Changed to the 2024 Theme. Tried incognito mode. A different browser.

    In the editor, the console shows 1 error – failed to load resource. The server responded with a status of 500 (). /web-stories/2024-atlantic-hurricane-season-forecast/

    Please help TIA

    Hi there, thanks for reaching out.

    If you encounter error code 500, you should check your PHP error log to find more information about the cause of it. There are tons of possible reasons why that could happen. Ask your hosting provider for help locating the error log if needed.

    Hello and thank you for replying.

    This is a website I took over managing several months ago, so I’m finding my way around.

    With about 40 domains, 20 databases, God only knows how many database users, and 10 websites on this server, with folders for fifty or more, it was kind of a mess. And the plugin stopped working on my watch, so that wasn’t a good look.

    Everything was running on PHP 8.1 or 8.2 so I assumed this site was as well.. Except it was still on 7.4.

    All the plugins and WordPress were current, so I backed up the server and then changed the PHP to 8.3,

    Problem Solved.
