waste of time

the installation section with a ‘priceless’ advice “Fill out all sections of the settings page.” is a joke, given the fact, that the settings are not explained and when they are, its absolutely not clear what does it mean. spent another 30 min with the documentation and still no idea what to put where

Hi @hvizdal
Did you contact support for assistance?
I know the documentation is not the best, but I am one guy on a tight timeline that is trying to do the best he can to help users for free.I’m sorry you feel frustrated. If you want, I can help you set it up. I’ve been helping a lot of users in our support forums.
Also, if you could suggest how we can improve our documentation to make it easier for others to understand how to proceed, that would be much appreciated.
I’m currently working on V2 that is scheduled for before May 25th. That would hopefully be easier to comprehend. I plan on adding a setup wizard to guide users through the process, on the first activation.
Maybe after my help, if you feel differently, you could review your rating.
Hey, thanks for your reply.
First thing which is not clear to me, this sentence is very confusing: ‘On login, the user must consent to the Privacy Policy outlined on the site. If the user does not consent, the user will not be registered or logged in.’
So what does this plug-in really cover? Only users with an account? If general web visitors, why are you talking about login. And what does it mean ‘will not be registered’?The setup – what is it ‘Consent description’ and ‘Registration message’, what should be put there? Why the default text are the same? How does the ‘Consent messages’ differ from ‘Privacy Banner’ Text aren’t they the same? If I create several consent options, which is shown when and why would i even need them?
Cookies – ‘how we use’ box serves for what, where is it displayed? If I want to write third party domains cookies, I add the domain, put there the cookies but I still have to write something in the ‘Cookies used by site’ box. But these cookies I want to have always active but the third party cookies not, so I thought to make two separate categories but apparently when entering the 3rd party cookies I have to enter always the 1st party cookies as well?
What is the ‘privacy excerpt’ – I have no idea what ‘the privacy preference window.’ is either so the explanation is not working. Why would I need a captcha for a cookie consent bar?
Hi @hvizdal
You have good points. Thanks to this we know more about how we can improve our documentation. For the sake of explanation, I will use the word Visitors when talking about logged out users.
I’ll try to address all your concerns.
One thing that I need to explain before I start is that this plugin is not a simple Cookie bar thing. It’s a complete solution for cookies, consents, data requests and so on. The privacy bar that shows up has a link that opens a privacy preference modal. Over there you can see all your consents with descriptions and so on. You can also get to this window with a shortcode.1- We need all users to agree to your site privacy policy. So users would need to agree with them. Logged in users will have to keep this consent up to date in order to use the site. I say up to date because if you make a change to your privacy policy, you have the option to ask your users for re-consent. That would make a notification asking for their new consent appear. We keep track of these acceptances in the database and in a cookie for users and visitors.
2- When you register a consent, like Privacy Policy you have the ability to add a brief text of what that is. The Registration message is the text that will come with the checkbox in a registration form. So a brief explanation would be a 2-3 liner while the registration message could be something like “You read and agreed to our XXX terms”.
3- “How we use” is an explanation of how the cookies that you registered in that category are used. So let’s say I added _ga, _gid as my analytics cookies. I need to explain to my users why I’m asking for those and how I use that data. Do I share it with someone? How is that data processed? How long do I keep it?
This is displayed in the same privacy preferences modal I described earlier.
When I first designed this, I had the intention of people using it with categories like Functional, Advertising, Analytics and so on. Inside those, you would have the list of cookies used and if a cookie is set by a third party, you would add that to the third party section. But from what I learned in the last few weeks is that users have used this in many different ways. Ways that I never considered possible. That’s why you might see this problem with the “cookies used” being required.
My intention with Third party cookies was for some things like Youtube that I cannot block them with the provided functions but I can add them as third-party and have a link with instructions on how to opt out.Privacy Excerpt is a brief description that you might want to use to describe how your site handles their user’s privacy.
4- Captcha is not for the bar. As I explained in the beginning, this is not a cookie solution. Is a full suite of tools to help with the new privacy law. We have shortcodes and functions to add request forms. These requests can be for users to close their account, to request a download link of the data the site has on them, to rectify data or simply to make a complaint. In order to reduce spam, users requested that I added an option to use reCaptcha.
My suggestion is that you install this on a local or staging environment so you can play around with it. Fill things out with any text and see how/where these will appear. That way you can see the privacy bar and the privacy preferences window.
One place you can go to view it in action and get the feel of how it works is on our own site. You will see the black bar at the bottom. If you click on Privacy Preferences, next to the “I agree” button, you will see the privacy preferences window, where most of the information filled in the settings can be found.
I would also like to point out that some of the described features behavior will change in the near future. I’m working on V2 and I’m going to make some changes and improvements based on user requests, suggestions and feedbacks. While the most part of what I wrote here will continue to be true, some of it might differ on a new version.
I hope I got all your questions. You can reach out to me again if you need further explanation and/or help.
Cheers

Fernando Claussen. Reason: forgot to link to our site
Hello again @hvizdal
I just wanted to let you know that I released a new version of the plugin where I tried to make things better for everyone and a little easier to understand what is what (with information icons).
I haven’t heard from you since my last reply so I decided to reach out.
If you ever try the new version, let me know what you think.
Hey Fernando, thanks for your reply. In the meantime I put on my site some trial version of a paid solution as it was easy to setup; I’ll have a look at your solution again within a few weeks to see if it might serve me better.
The OP is right… this is really a joke…
No automatic cookie detection
AND TO ENABLE OR DISABLE the cookies you need
to be a programmer and change Template files… -
