Sometimes you have to click off the contact page to another page. The, when you click back to the contact page, you get that error message showing up at the top of the content.

If possible, check the PHP error log on your host. There might be other errors relating to this case.

there aren't any error logs being generated by this. the only one i have is from 3/31/2014. could this be a problem with wordpress 3.9?

No, it's not likely to be relating with WordPress 3.9.

Do you use multi-site install? Or single install each site?

Just the single install. Contacted the hosting provider (1&1). They weren't any help. :(

What's weird is that it's hit-and-miss. Sometimes when you go to the page with the contact form, it's fine. Then, when you refresh the page, the error pops up.

Thanks. And what version of GD and FreeType do you use?

GD just says "bundled (2.1.0 compatible)" and FreeType is 2.4.2.

FreeType seems bit old. The current stable is 2.5.3. Is it possible to upgrade it?

just asked 1&1 to upgrade FreeType. if they do, we'll see if that's the problem. if they don't, i'll move my sites to a host that's more helpful.

i honestly don't think it's the plugin at this point. i have it installed on other sites on 1&1 servers, but not under my account, so probably different servers. it's working fine on those, so my thinking is that it's just this server.

in the meantime, do you think downgrading RSC would fix the present problem? wouldn't be a permanent fix, but would it work?

    thanks.

I don't think so, but if you try, get v1.5 from here:
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/really-simple-captcha/developers/

The v1.5 uses font files different than the current version.
