Support » Installing WordPress » WARNING: Do not update in WordPress

  • For the second time, I have attempted to make an update to my WP version in WP. Silly me as my provider GoDaddy strongly suggests making the updates directly onto their server.

Well, for he second time it has completely wiped out my blog. I still have all my old blog files but as someone who is a relative novice to designing in WP, I can’t reassemble my site. I actually have had to go in and pull everything by hand. And forget about the old design, that’s gone too.

If you love your blog please make all your updates through your service provider and not on the WP site. I’m sure this error doesn’t happen all the time but seeing as it’s happened to me twice (once three years ago and once last week) I would highly recommend not doing it.

  • It’s always advisable to perform a backup of your own database and also backup everything, disable your plugins and change back your default theme before upgrade it to the latest version.

I forgot to mention that WordPress then locked me out of my server with an error. So I couldn’t even get back into WP to fix anything. I ended up having to go in through Filezilla and delete the entire blog and start over because it was giving both visitor and me a Forbidden error message.

It’s fine. What’s done is done. But you might want to give people a warning that it is safer to make the changes internally from their servers than through the automated WP update. Just to be fair.

That’s the only reason I posted this…to warn people so they don’t go through what I went through.
