When the makers of this plugin removed the old job system and moved to the new version of the plugin and everything broke your old backups, they automatically enabled backups getting uploaded to your server in .tar format. These are in the /wp-content/uploads/backwpup/xxxxxxx/backups folder and are set to run every month.

We’ve NEVER had backups set to upload to our own server, let alone into folders of the actual website. We discovered over 100GB of backup files across a lot of different sites.

    This plugin maker is reckless.

    Hi @discountartsy,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I understand how frustrating it must have been to discover so much space being used unexpectedly.

By default, BackWPup only keeps 15 backups on the server unless the setting is changed, so if more than that were being retained, it may have been linked to migration from older jobs. We’ve since addressed all related issues in newer versions, including being able to deselect Website Server as a storage option and changing the default archive format from TAR to ZIP for easier handling.

With more details like the plugin version you were on or by checking legacy jobs, we could have suggested the best way forward and helped prevent this. I’d really encourage you to reach out to our support directly, we’ll be glad to work with you to resolve it quickly.

    Best regards,
