Warning: An existing WordPress network was detected.

  • I had a multisite installation running correctly, using retail-power.com as the top level domain. I then changed the domain to retailpower.biz, using GoDaddy CPanel. The domain propagated correctly, but I could not log into WP, so I decided to do a fresh install of WP.

Now when I attempt to configure multisite using correct code snippets in wp-config and .httaccess, the database becomes “dead”. I noticed a warning in the Create a Network of WordPress Sites window: “An existing WordPress network was detected”, and I also notice that one of the code snippets is as follows: define( ‘DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE’, ‘retail-power.com’ ). This makes no sense to me. Are there hooks written somewhere other than .httaccess and wp-config that need to be removed or changed?

  • Your database.

If you’re starting over, make sure you wipe the DB (or delete it and make a new one).

Thanks for your response. I am happy to delete the DB and make a new one. Isn’t that what happens by default when WordPress is removed and reinstalled? I’m using GoDaddy WordPress control panel.

Yes, that’s what’s supposed to happen, but I don’t know GoDaddys’ control panel or what it does, so the best thing to do is do it manually.
