• I am very new at wordpress, building sites and blogging in general but decided to give it a try anyway so hopefully this isn’t a really dumb question! I have tried searching for the answer myself for two days now and have come up with so many confusing answers to what I think is a very simple question:
I started a self hosted website through ipage and through mojo market place downloaded wordpress with their one click download. I ended up with wordpress.com. I have researched wordpress.org and wordpress.com and really wanted wordpress.org. If anyone could please save me a few hours more frustration and tell me how to fix this I would be so grateful!!!
    Thank you so much!

  • What do you mean you ended up with .com? Did you set up a site there?

I didn’t do anything other than the the one click install and then it asked me to choose a domain name. that’s all ive done so far but when I go to wordpress from ipage it goes to wordpress.com with none of the options that would be there if it was .org which is what I wanted.

    What is the domain name??

elizabethseden.wordpress.com/ maybe I made a mistake using .com in it? I just didn’t understand at the time and that was what was recommended to me

Yes, you cannot use wordpress.com unless you are on the WordPress.COM site. Did you register a domain name? That’s what you need to do to use WordPress.ORG version on ipage.

no, I don’t think I registered the name lol (im so confused at this point! and really really new at this) thanks for helping me! so how do I get from where I am now to using wordpress.org?

I have been trying to figure out what you mean by registering. I did sign up with it and it is listed as my “primary domain” but I didn’t pay anything. Do I need to update it and pay for one of the $18/year addresses? For some reason my update primary domain button is disabled.

Do not do anything on WordPress.COM – it’s totally unrelated to your site at this point.

You need to register a domain name –

You can register one through iPage or another domain registrar – ask them for help or look at their support pages for Domains.

I really appreciate your response! I do have a domain name registered at ipage which is elizabethseden.com what is really confusing me is that I do see a WordPress.org dashboard now (which is why I changed the status of this thread to resolved) however when I try to click on the WordPress icon from my ipage it asks if I want to install WordPress?! So I don’t understand how that happened but I do see my domain name in the address bar on my wordpress.org site. My user name is my email somehow and my URL is still elizabethseden.wordpress.com. Do I need to register another domain name specifically for WordPress.org?

I get an iPage page here:

    http://elizabethseden.com/

Did you already install WP on your iPage account? If so, the generic page may be showing because that’s index.html page in the root of your server (which will appear instead of the WP site) see if you can remove that file using the file manager in your iPage account. Or ask them for help with this.

I did install WordPress from ipage but it’s uninstalled now. If I try clicking on WordPress from the page it just asks me if I want to install it. So I guess what I am trying to do now is make sure my wordpress.org is linked to my ipage. It does say my ipage address in the search bar on my wordpress page which is weird but on ipage it’s as though WordPress doesn’t exist. Maybe I should give them a call. Thank you so much for your help!

If you uninstalled it, then yep, try installing it again. There should be someplace where you select the domain you want to use for that installation.

Also, make sure you’ve cleared your browser cache and cookies – as it can be what’s taking your to the old .COM site.
