    I would like to edit the 404 template. Should I edit with in the parent theme. I am actually using a child theme. I don’t know how to go about customizing the 404 page using a child theme.

    I don’t feel comfortable using any plugins I have found. I would rather create/customize my own.

    I want to just say a few words and then have a list of links the visitor can choose to click on.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Yep, just create 404.php in your child theme – you can probably just copy whatever is currently in 404.php in the parent theme and edit away as you see fit.

    I kind of assumed I could accomplish this task the way you desscribed. I want to ensure I understand how to get it into the child theme. I have to create a new file and them move to the child theme via FTP correct?

    I have created the 404 page under my child them. I entered the following code:

    <?php get_header(); ?>
    <div id=”content” class=”widecolumn”>
    <h2 class=”center”>Hi! My name is Emily and I am the blogger behind Simple Savvy Living. I am really sorry about the missing page. Stick around and see if you can find what you are looking for by using the search box at the right or by looking through the categories below. Thanks for stopping by.</h2>
    <?php get_sidebar(); ?>
    <?php get_footer(); ?>

    The page is working. My only problem is the sidebar area is cut off and too narrow. The titles of the sidebar items are the correct width but the content underneath each title is more narrow. You can take a look by entering the following link. Thanks.

    Figured it out on my own.
