    I would like to create a widget area at the bottom of my content, a widget that also spans below the sidebar widget. Is this possible?

  • Almost any thing is possible :). But to do that you would need to be using a child theme — so that your changes are not overwritten when the theme is updated. What theme are you using?

    Hello, and thank you. I am using twenty-ten, but I have already made many many changes to the theme 🙁

    Is it possible to still create a child theme, and if not, then I’ll just go ahead and continue making changes…

    working with a child theme is more a ‘should’ than a ‘must’ – just make sure to keep a backup copy of your theme, and not to accidentally update Twenty Ten.

    Twenty Ten already has four footer widget areas – do you want your one to be additional to that?

    general:
    http://www.transformationpowertools.com/wordpress/add-custom-widget-area-wordpress

    adapted to Twenty Ten:

    add into functions.php:

    register_sidebar(array(
    'name'         => 'Custom Widget Area',
    'id'            => 'custom-widgets',
    'description' => 'a custom widget area',
    		'before_widget' => '<li id="%1$s" class="widget-container %2$s">',
    		'after_widget' => '</li>',
    		'before_title' => '<h3 class="widget-title">',
    		'after_title' => '</h3>',
     ));

    add into footer.php after </div><!-- #main -->:

    <?php if ( is_active_sidebar( 'custom-widgets' ) ) : ?>
    	<div class="custom"><ul>
    	<?php dynamic_sidebar( 'custom-widgets' ); ?>
    	</ul></div>
    <?php endif; ?>

    to remove the bullet, add to style.css:

    .custom ul { list-style-type: none; }

    Is it possible to still create a child theme…

    I am no expert here, but yes, it is. You can convert what you have into a Child Theme behind a fresh Parent. That project might be a bit tedious, but you will only have to do it once…and then the Parent will be there as a fall-back if/when your Child Theme might become troubled.

    Thank you very much for your help everyone. It looks like the task is too complex for my minimal understanding of php and the overall structure of a wordpress site at this stage.
